Project Description:

Tigris is a High-Fidelity music venue — the first of it’s kind in Detroit. Equipped with a custom sound system from renowned audio design studio Bing Audio, Tigris offers patrons an acoustically exceptional listening experience focussed on curated vinyl selections by its staff during the week and from featured DJs on weekends. Tigris is composed of two rooms, a playful front room serving coffee during the daytime, and the Listening Room dedicated to more intentional music programming open only in the evenings. The Listening Room, features a curved bar, a dance floor and primary sound system, and two lounge areas—one elevated and one sunken—which flank the DJ booth on either side.

When we first toured the building with our clients, our attention was drawn to a sunken area of floor which, in the building's previous life, served as an overflow pit for a vodka distilling tank. We saw this architectural anomaly, not as an obstacle, but as a design opportunity that could offer a new spatial relationship between DJ and audience. For years, I’ve been interested in how rethinking dance music venue design could shift people's attention away from the DJ booth, and refocus it back on the music and their fellow listeners; the overflow pit's lower elevation provided just such an opportunity. While the main listening room can reconnect with itself, the sunken DJ booth and accompanying lounge area, form a conversation pit, shaping an intentional space for intimate connection with the DJ, the music, and one another.
